A Prayer for America

I am going to do something contrary for me. I’m going to share a brief, quickly composed post.

I personally have struggled to know how to pray for my nation since I believe we have too long ignored God’s warnings and are now in the last days prophecied of in Scripture. This is not to say I have no hope, nor that I belive God has abandoned His people. God is not by far done with the world and we as His children and the light of the world need to be about His work until He takes us home. I know we must still pray –and in fact, pray all the more, that righteousness would prevail and souls will be saved, whatever the future holds.

As I grappled with these things I found Psalm 83 to be the perfect prayer for America now. In fact, I was amazed by just how well it fit. It asks for help and for justice, and clearly states the case of those in this world that are trying to tear us apart as a nation.

Here is my prayer, based on the psalm:

Dear Heavenly Father,

Do not keep silent while wicked people prevail! Do not hold Your peace, and do not be still, O God! Don’t You hear the uproar of Your enemies? Don’t You see that Your arrogant enemies are rising up? They devise crafty schemes against Your people; they conspire against Your precious ones. “Come,” they say, “let us wipe out America as a nation. We will destroy the very memory of its existence.” Yes, this was their unanimous decision. They signed a treaty as allies against You. Do to them as You did to the enemies of the Israelites, for they said, “Let us seize for our own use these land of God!” O my God, scatter them like tumbleweed, like chaff before the wind! As a fire burns a forest and as a flame sets mountains ablaze, chase them with Your fierce storm; terrify them with Your tempest. Utterly disgrace them until they submit to Your name, O Lord. Let them be ashamed and terrified forever. Let them die in disgrace. Then they will learn that You alone are called the Lord, that You alone are the Most High, supreme over all the earth. We trust in You, O Lord.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

I urge you to read the psalm for yourself and put the psalmists prayer into your own words.

There are many psalms that are perfect for our nation right now and Psalm 85 is another one I would suggest.

How about you? How are you praying for our nation? We are in a spiritual battle right now and our prayers are the perfect way to fight!
