Isn’t Love the Greatest?

“Isn’t love the greatest?!”

This is an expression you might expect from an exuberant bride-to-be, just discovering how incredible love is and looking forward to the promise of it growing in the years to come.

And yet, with no such occasion looming on my horizon, I can say just exuberantly, “Isn’t love the greatest?”

“Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is love.” –1 Cor. 13:13

We tend to get caught up in the romantic form of love as though the satisfaction of romantic love were all there is. But it is interesting to note that in nearly every mention of love in the Scripture the word pertains to brotherly love instead.

You see, my point is that love is great even when it’s not Valentine’s Day. And it’s great in all it’s forms.

There is no way around it, we need love. I firmly believe we need love more than we need food and water, shelter and health. Yes, we need these to remain alive, but who wants to live without love?

“But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” – 1 John 4:8

God created us with a reservoir specifically for love that is very much our real heart, our central organ. We need it to be filled to survive and when we don’t have it, we search for it everywhere. Romantic love seems to fill it for a time, but we eventually realize it is a mere drop in the bucket. We need more, we need something stronger.

What our love reservoir needs most is God’s love. He created us to need love but not just any love. It is His love that satisfies the reservoir so that, even if we had no other love, it would still be enough.

Here is the important part. We’ve acknowledged that we need love, that only God’s love truly satisfies, so the question is, where can we find it?

“God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him.” – 1 John 4:9

All of Scripture oozes with evidence of God’s passionate love for us. In fact, the general purpose of the Bible is to reveal to us just that.

We need love. God is ready to fill you to overflowing with His. All you have to do is open the reservoir door and let Him.

So don’t you agree? Isn’t love the greatest?
